A high protein diet that is high in carbs and low in fats is called ketosis. By definition, ketosis is the body’s metabolism increases by more than 50% to a level where it is beyond what is called diabetic ketoacidosis. This occurs when a diabetic has too many ketones in their bloodstream. These ketones are toxic to the brain and can cause seizures and coma.
The great thing about ketosis is that it is very easy to have. It can be achieved by just cutting out carbohydrates from your diet.
You will still need to eat vegetables and some lean meat and low-fat dairy products. So, you can still eat a lot of grains and other non-fiber foods in your diet, but you won’t be consuming as many carbs. And you won’t have as many ketones in your blood as you would in ketoacidosis.
So, what foods are out? Basically, all starches, sugar, and anything with a high glycemic index value in your diet is out. This includes white flour, white rice, white bread, white pasta, and white potatoes. Everything else is allowed.
Ketosis is very good for the body and is not a threat to diabetes you have. But if you have type two diabetes, this high protein diet can make your diabetes worse if you go on it long term.
In addition to this, you should consider the fact that low-carb diets are also dangerous. You should try to do this for several weeks at a time. Also, low-carb diets do not work very well or work at all for most people.
Just to make sure, try this experiment for three days and then have some food that contains very little carbohydrates, and eat the same food one day after that. Then try it again and see if the ketoacidosis is gone. If you cannot eat this carb-free food, then you probably have ketoacidosis.
Another experiment to try, I don’t know if you have ever tried it before, you may want to try eating out for the first time in years, with one big exception. You may want to try the salad bar at your local fast food place and the big salad chains like Quiznos and Jimmy Johns.
You may not be able to find these salad and menu items at your regular grocery store. Because they are well known for their low-carb menus. So, this is an experiment you may want to try, that would give you a taste of low-carb dining, without the carbs.
But, don’t panic, because you will be eating the same amount of calories and carb levels as your normal meals. So, you will be losing weight and getting into ketosis just as if you were eating in a normal restaurant.
